Frequent Handwashing and Handcare

Washing your hands properly, is more important than ever right now. We have all seen countless tutorials on how to wash your hands thoroughly by medical professionals, celebrities and world leaders. Washing your hands is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. The reason why soap and anti-bacterial gels are so effective is that they help to lift germs of the surface of our skin and can damage the lipid membrane of the viruses and bacteria. However, the barrier of our skin is also made up of lipids, oils and ceramides, so excessive washing removes some of the protective oils from the skin’s barrier.

If you’re washing your hands and they look healthy and feel soft, you’re probably okay. However, if your hands are feeling itchy, flack, painful or look red, then your skin is at risk of becoming dry and cracked, making it much easier for bacteria and viruses to get into the body. That’s why hand care is so important, there’s never been a more important time to keep your hands moisturised.

After washing your hands, dab them dry and apply a good moisturiser. It’s best to keep a moisturiser by your sink, or one you can carry around in your pocket like this one. Doctors recommend moisturisers with humectants like glycerine and emollients like mango or shea butter that help hold moisture in the skin for longer. If your skin is already cracked, use a thick moisturiser like this one and wear some protective cotton gloves to wear until the condition improves.
